CD4 LOW
May 27, 2006

I have always had a CD4 count above 350, today i was told my CD4 count is 109. Does this make my diagnosis from just HIV+ to AIDS????

Response from Dr. Sullivan

An absolute CD4 count less than 200 is associated with a high risk of opportunistic infections. You should have a repeat CD4 count to confirm that it is below 200. If you have access to treatment and your CD4 count is less than 200 you should initiate treatment with a three or four drug regimen immediately. You should also receive prophylactic antibiotic treatment for prevention of pneumocystis carinii pneumonia. Most importantly is for you to be in the care of a physician who is a specialist in HIV care.JLS.
