Response from Dr. Sullivan
Babies who are born infected with HIV are usually completely normal at birth; the first symptoms that HIV infected babies experience are usually swollen lymph glands; these may occur in the arm pits and the groin area, where the legs join the body; babies that have been infected while in the uterus can be diagnosed immediately after birth by measuring HIV RNA or DNA[ these are expensive tests and are not readily available in most parts of the world]; babies who are infected during the birth process[ labor and delivery] cannot be detected until the end of the first week of life when HIV DNA and RNA becomes detectable in the blood; even though babies may appear well at birth the virus is raging in their bodies and many of us who treat HIV infected infants strongly believe that babies should be be treated very early following diagnosis; we have experience with infants who started treatment at less than 1 month of age who are now ten years of age and have normal immune systems; they have tolerated treatment with 3 drugs for ten years without significant side effects; JLS. |
