PREGNANCY
Oct 23, 2005

I AM A POSITIVE WOMAN AND MY PARTNER IS NOT WE WANT TO HAVE CHILDREN ONEDAY. WE ARE CONSIDERING IN VITRO FERTILIZATION. DO YOU KNOW OF ANY POSITIVE COUPLES WHO HAVE HAD SUCESS?

Response from Dr. Luzuriaga

As you know, unprotected sex carries the risk of infecting your partner. Articficial insemination would be safe, effective, and probably less expensive than in vitro fertilization. You should disccuss your options with your care provider, when you're ready to consider pregancy.

It will be important for you to optimize your health and think about preventing transmission of the virus to your baby. There's lots of good information on this web site with regards to preventing mother-to-child HIV transmission. A good place to start would be to review the "Guidelines for the Use of Antiretrovirals During Pregnancy" available under the Treatment Guidelines section of this web site.
