How is hepatitis spread?
Jun 9, 2005

If someone has extremely high levels of ALT in blood test and is a heavy drinker what are the chances that they have hepatitis? And the chances that they have spread it to their family?

Response from Dr. Luzuriaga

Hepatitis is a term that refers to an inflammation of the liver and has many possible causes (drugs or medications, alcohol, infections). It is impossible to comment on why someone may have elevated liver enzymes without a specific work-up. I would urge you to discuss this with your care provider to do appropriate testing to understand why the ALT is elevated.
