Response from Dr. Lee
Pap smears test for cancer and pre-cancer of the cervix. Cancer of the cervix is thought to be caused by a progressive infection with human papilloma virus. So, like other infections that get worse with lower t-cell counts, the likelihood that HPV infection will progress increases with decreasing t-cells. THerefore it is more important to check more frequently in women with lower t-cells. Check with your doctor for your particular risks and recommendations for pap testing. Be well. |
