Getting pregnant when you're positive
May 25, 2004

I am HIV positive and my boyfriend of 4yrs isnt. My CD4 is 856. Can I get pregnant without transmitting the virus to him?

Response from Dr. Sullivan

The only way that you could be absolutely certain that your boyfriend was not at risk for becoming infected would be through artificial insemination; if you become pregnant and your viral load is undetectable[ less than 50 copies/ml] throughout pregnancy you would have a less than 1% chance[ almost zero] chance of transmitting HIV to your infant; JLS.
