My older sister has H.I.V. and is living in a continuing care facility. At this time she is exibiting negative behavior, such as stealing jewelry, cigarettes, and other things. She also refuses to shower, or change her clothes, unless she is bribed by the staff with the promise of cigarettes if she does these things. She is getting into trouble and may even be asked to leave, what do I do?
Response from Dr. Luzuriaga
Your sister should be evaluated by her care provider. With a physical exam and some lab tests, she/he can evaluate whether there are other signs of potential CNS involvement with HIV or whether other conditions may account for the new behaviors.
