Painful lymph nodes
Sep 7, 2003

Dr. Aberg, What do you recommend for chronically painful lymph nodes, when Tylenol and Advil don't help?

My lymph nodes also, while painful all the time, do not swell. Could this mean that they have been damaged through immune compromise? (because a swollen lymph node is a good thing...an appropriate response to HIV infection?).

Many thanks.

Response from Dr. Aberg

The generalized lymphadenopathy (palpable, enlarged lymph nodes) seen in HIV are usually not painful except during primary (initial)HIV infection. Painful lymph nodes suggest an inflammatory or infectious process. You do not state which lymph nodes are tender. You should see your primary care provider so s/he can examine your lymph nodes and determine what the source of pain is from.
