Adoption - prognosis of HIV+ adopted baby
Mar 8, 2003

We have just adopted twins from Africa. They are 1 year old. The girl is HIV+, but the boy is negative. The tests were done in Africa. Are they likely to be incorrect? What length of life span are our babies expected to have? Do you have any statistics? Thank you very much,

Response from Dr. Luzuriaga

You should definitely have the children evaluated at a center that has expertise in diagnosing and caring for HIV positivie children (or your pediatrician could consult with a pediatric HIV expert). I would repeat testing on both. If one or both are infected, it would then be important to evaluate their viral load and CD4+ T cell counts. At their age, many experts would recommend therapy, with the objective of controlling the virus as tightly as possible and keeping their immune system healthy. We know that antiretroviral therapy can control HIV in children very well for many years, possibly decades.
