Are pregnant women routinely screened fo rHIV?
Mar 8, 2003

Is theer any specialreason why a pre-natal doctor would ask for HIV test? Also:If someone was infected at or before the time of pregnancy what symptoms would she expect to have,if any? A certain woman can't sleep well now. She started worrying? Could the worry harm her pregnancy? If she hears nothing does that mean it is okay? She is afraid to ask. It'slike testing for a genetic disases in this way.

Response from Dr. Luzuriaga

In the U.S., routine HIV testing is recommended for pregnant women, so this is probably why your friend was asked about HIV testing. The only way to know the result for sure is to ask -- the results should be available 1-2 weeks after the test was done.
