Gram stain
Feb 9, 2003

HI

MY BROTHER HAD A SMEAR TEST?IS IT DONE ONLY TO FIND GONNORRHEA OR CHLAMYDIA,OR ANY OTHER STDS? HIS REPORT SAID" NO ORGANISMS FOUND,NO PUS CELLS,OCASSIONAL SQUAMOUS EPTHILEAL CELLS FOUND?IS IT NORMAL REPORT......PLZZZZZZZ ADVICE

Response from Dr. Aberg

A gram stain is a test that is done on body fluids, wounds, pus, etc to look for specific types of bacteria. Your brother sounds like he had a gram stain done on drainage or discharge from his penis. His results suggest there is no infection but a gram stain is not 100% conclusive. Cultures for gonorrhea can be obtained as well as DNA probes looking for gonorrhea and chlamydia. Also, a gram stain will not detect syphilis, genital warts or HIV.
