conflicting info
Jan 28, 2003

hi dr brooks, is it true that hiv-1 test can detect hiv 2 infection 70 of the time.also if hiv2 infection progresses slowly, then how long does it take to show up on the test(is it the same time frame as hiv1)and the last one is that,is the first generation of elisa as efficient as the third one what is the diff???? i'm so confused.i ve read about all this from this website

Response from Dr. Jackson

Certain licensed HIV antibody tests detect both HIV-1 and HIV-2 extremely well. Third generation HIV antibody tests are more sensitive in detecting HIV antibody earlier than 1st generation tests. I do not know whether the window period is longer in HIV-2 infection than HIV-1.

BJ
