Response from Dr. Aberg
The short answer is that "it depends". It depends on you and the stage of your disease. There are practicing providers who are infected with HIV as well as medical students. However, if you have advanced disease, you may have difficulty keeping up with the requirements of the curriculum. Many individuals infected with HIV live very productive and happy lives. Many of them work hard long hours just as those not infected with HIV. If you have more advanced disease or you are having symptoms that interfere in your ability to perform daily activities, you should consider treatment (if not already on) to improve your symptoms. But having HIV is not a reason to drop out of medical school or think you cannot go on with your career. You may want to contact the HIV providers at your university to see if they can refer you to a physician who is living with HIV for support and guidance. |
