Response from Dr. Aberg
One of the biggest concerns about two people with HIV having sex is whether you can transmit virus to one another. There does appear to be at least one actual case of a "superinfection" where a person with HIV acquired a second strain of HIV. The real issue woud be whether you could transmit a resistant virus limiting your options. For instance, if you were exposed to certain antriretroviral drugs and had a resistant virus, could you transmit that resistant virus to your partner thereby limiting the choices of therapy for your partner? Another concern is transmission of other sexually transmited diseases. Do either you or your partner have other partners that could potentially expose you to other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) such as gonorrhea, chlamydia, herpes, genital warts or hepatitis B or possibly hepatitis C? Obviously the answer to this is your decision based on the risks and benefits. As a health care provider, I must tell you what the concerns are and recommend safer sex practices to everyone. Reality is that we do not know what the risk of transmitting virus between 2 positive partners are. Only you and your partner know if you are monogamous and truly do not have any other sexual partners that potentially could expose you to another STD. |
