| Husband +, Wife - want a baby Jun 17, 2002 My husband was diagnosed with HIV a few years ago. I have been tested 5 times and all these times I tested negative. We have been planning to have a baby, but obviously the risk of me getting infected is high. I have heard of invitro fertilization...how does that work and who should I contact? My OBGYN told me that I need to talk to an HIV expert regarding my desire to have a baby, but I think he definitely needs to get involved in this. Your response will be greately appreciated. Thanks!!! |

Response from Dr. Luzuriaga
In vitro fertilization is a process by which the egg is fertilized in the test tube. Some have advocated this as a less risky (but not risk-free) way for HIV discordant couples to conceive. In vitro fertilization is fairly widely available (usually at fertility clinics) but can be expensive. Your OB/GYN should be able to help you with a referral.
