Recently tested Positive - Need Answers
Sep 7, 2004

Hello, I have a two part question - First, I was recently diagnosed as being HIV+ and my currant levels are T-cells 399, Lymph Percentage 19%, Viral Load 100,000. Do you suggest that I should start treatment now and, can you suugest a certain drug regiman?

Secondly - Do drug resistant strains of HIV only get transmitted by individuals who are currently on HIV meds and pass the virus on?

Thanks for answering my questions!!!

Response from Dr. Lee

In answer to your second question, YES. Drug resistant strains are commonly passed even if the person is not currently on HIV meds when they pass the virus.

The first question depends upon you and your doctors level of aggressiveness. I suggest that most doctors would treat your viral load of 100,000. However, some might hold off until your T-cells drop. Personally, I am an aggressive treater and usually recommend starting on meds sooner rather than later.

The second part of your first question is no, I cannot make a specific recommendation. This is because the regimen should be tailored to your specific needs (such as what the likelihood of a resistant strain, what your habits and other life issues are, what the other aspects of your medical history are, etc.) Talk to a doc who is experienced in HIV care in your area.

Be well.
