Right combination during pregnancy
Jun 9, 2004

hi, i am 30 years , tested as hiv+ 10 years ago, my vl is >25 and cd > 800, i am taking stokrin + videx + viread ... i read somewhere that stocrin is not recomanded while pregnancy, but my problem is i have no other option cause i can't take anything else due to virus mutation and obviously the current combination is handling the virus best way, i am realy worried cause i dont have anything else to replace the stocrin and on the other hand dont want to risk myself or my baby, what shell i do? please anwer me asp ! i am realy pressed.

Response from Dr. Lee

Please talk to your doctor. Stocrin (Sustiva in the US) which is efavirenz has been linked to the possibility of neural tube disorders (such as spina bifida). If you are planning a pregnancy you might consider replacing this medicine with another from this class of drugs (non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors) or possibly using a protease inhibitor instead.

Be well.
