Response from Dr. Aberg

Many people with HIV experience diarrhea. Diarrhea may be due to infections, side effects from medications, irritable bowel syndrome which may worsen with stress, other non-infectious inflammatory conditions of the colon and other systemic illnesses. Even HIV itself may cause diarrhea in advanced stages of the diesase. Many times diarrhea is associated with stress or foods that we eat. It is not always that the food is toxic, it sometimes just doesn't "sit well" like a really greasy meal. Some people are just more prone to diarrhea with certain food products or have an intolerance to some types of foods.

Different types of infections may occur as the CD4 or T-cell count declines so it is very important to know what the CD4 count is at the time a person develops diarrhea. It is equally important to tell your doctor when the diarrhea started, what it is like (watery, blood, frequency) and if there are any associated symptoms (fever, abdominal pain, etc.) Also, does anyone else that you have been in contact with have the same symptoms. So, you can see there are many different reasons for diarrhea. If someone has diarrhea for more than 3 days, has bloody or black stools, severe stomach cramps, feels dizzy when they go from laying down to standing up (a sign of dehydration) or fevers, they should see a doctor immediately.
