HIV Simptoms
Jun 30, 2001
Dear Doctor,
I would like to know a series of symptoms of a HIV infected person with respect to time.
That is roughly what symptoms and when they are expected to occur in an HIV infected person.( Within the first two moths after possible infection)
Thank you for your help.
Mike.

Response from Dr. Aberg

Mike,
Not sure why you are asking this on the women's forum but for the most part, HIV does not differ between genders.
The symptoms of HIV primary infection can vary. Some people may not even be aware they have acquired HIV. Others may get a mild sore throat and others may present with meninigitis (infection in the central nervous system).
Common symptoms are those similar to the flu such as headache, rash, muscle cramps, sore throat with or without thrush (a yeast infection in the mouth), fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea. Some people are very ill and require hospitalization. That is why when you get sick, doctors ask all these questions that seem rather personal such as have you had a new partner, did you have unprotected sex, etc. We don't want to miss something.
The time period is generally within a couple of days to weeks after exposure and may last up to six-10 weeks. Most people remain without any symptoms for years before they have any signs or symptoms of HIV.
