   Response from Dr. Luzuriaga

Vaginal thrush is the term for a fungal infection ("Candida") of the vagina that commonly occurs in women. Symptoms may include burning or itching and a thick, white discharge. Any woman who experiences vaginal discharge should seek medical evaluation and treatment. While certain factors (diabetes; antibiotic use; immunodeficiencies, including HIV) predispose women to the development of thrush, thrush itself is not diagnostic of any of these conditions. Antifungal cream or suppositories are effective; a single dose of oral fluconazole is also highly effective. Once in a while, women with HIV or other underlying conditions may need re-treatment.
