CMV IgM positive treatment
Feb 28, 2006

i m tested & found to be CMV IgM positive after giving birth to child who didn't survive due to TORCH. Doctor told not to go for next pregnancy. Is there any effective treatment prior to planning pregnancy.?

Response from Dr. Luzuriaga

When mothers become infected with CMV for the first time during pregnancy, there is an increased risk of passing the virus to the baby. Infection of the fetus can result in a generalized infection; fetal death, mental retardation, or hearing loss are common sequellae of intrauterine CMV infection. CMV is a virus that is never cleared by infected individuals; however, recovery from acute infection is usually associated with the development of immune responses that help to control the CMV (and markedly lower the risk of transmission during subsequent pregnancies). We therefore usually recommend that women who have experienced primary CMV wait for several months following the resolution of their acute CMV infection before they become pregnant again.

There are some antivirals that are effective against CMV. However, they are not curative and they are primarily recommended for use in immunocompromised individuals or young infants born with symptomatic CMV infection. If you are clinically recovering from CMV (or asymptomatic) and are not immunocompromised, antiviral treatment would not be recommended.
