NEG TEST RESULT 6 WEEKS AFTER RISK
Nov 4, 2005

I had unprotected sex with a Turkish/Cypriot man whilst on holiday. I did a home antibody test 6 weeks after and it came up negative. I am worried sick waiting to get tested in a clinic at 12 weeks after. Could you please give me some sort of indication of the risk that I may have been infected with hiv. I had a panic attack in work today and am going out of my mind with worry. Thanks

Response from Dr. Sullivan

you are unlikely to be infected;you have a negative antibody test at 6 weeks when many individuals would have been antibody positive and the overall risk for HIV infection when your partner is HIV infected is 3 infections for 1000 acts of vaginal intercourse; this being said you should follow through with the test at 12 weeks to be absolutely sure; JLS.
