can hiv induce a menopause?

Response from Dr. Aberg

HIV typically does not induce menopause. There are reports of higher rates of menstrual irregularities including amenorrhea (which is when periods stop). This seems to be more common in women with current recreational drug use particularly intravenous drugs such as heroin. Women who exercise heavily (such as gymnists, skaters) also may experience an absence of menses. There are other reports suggesting that there are little to no difference in the menstrual cycles between women with and without HIV. There is no data to suggest that management of menstrual irregularities in women with HIV should be treated any differently than women without HIV. If you are having early menopause, you should see your doctor to have this evaluated.
