Ask the Experts about Women and HIV

pregnant by positive father
Apr 26, 2006

I am with a man who has AIDS. I am now 8 months pregnant. I was told that it can take a while for HIV to show up in your system. Thus far my tests have been negative for HIV and I just want to know if there is still a chance my son could have it and could having sex during my pregnancy give it to him??

Response from Dr. Luzuriaga

Continuing unprotected sex defnitely carries the risk of transmitting the infection to you. Women who newly acquire infection during pregnancy are at high risk of passing the virus to the baby. I would therefore urge you to take all precautions during pregnancy to prevent you from getting infected. There is a lot of information on this web site on safe sex, including the Safe Sex and Discordant Couples Forums.

You don't indicate when the last testing was done in relation to your last possible exposure, so I can't reallly answer your question about testing. However, most individuals (including pregnant women) develop antibodies and are positive on testing within 6-8 weeks of infection. I would urge you to discuss your situation with your care provider so that he/she can arrange for appropriate follow-up testing.
