My Dr. wants to use artificial insemination
Aug 15, 2005

Hello Dr.

My boyfriend I are trying to have a baby, we are both HIV +, undetectable and health. My Dr. changed one of my meds the (Sustiva) to Reyataz/Atazanavir and Norvin/Ritonavir. My question is the Dr. said she wants us to do artificial insemination to prevent cross infection and also not to transmit the virus to the baby. However my boyfriend does not agree with that since we are both undetectable and healthy. What is your opinion? Thank you to all of you for all the good work.

Response from Dr. Luzuriaga

There is a very small chance of each of you passing your virus(es) to the other. However, if both of you are on medications with undetectable viral loads, the risk of this occurring is probably small and artificial insemination with your boyfriend's sperm would not necessarily reduce the risk.
