| Diet for AIDS and multiple medical problems Jul 29, 1999 I have a patient who needs help with constructing a diet to meet multiple medical needs. He has consulted a dietician who provided several disease specific sets of guidelines but who was unable to work out an individualized plan due to the complexity of his situation. He was diagnosed with AIDS in 1994 and currently has a viral load of 55 on Viracept, Ziagen, and Sustiva. He has high blood pressure, hypokalemia, hyperurecemia, adult onset DM, and most recently hyperlipidemia. He is taking medications to control all of these conditions. What dietary strategies would you suggest? |

Response from Dr. Fisher
This may be too complex for a curbside (or internet) consult. I'd try sending him back to the nutritionist with instructions not to leave until or unless he gets a satisfactory plan. The best idea mught be to concentrate on the HIV and DM aspects of his diet and utilize medications to control the lipids, BP, uric acid and K problems. Alvan Fisher, M.D. |
