| Growth Hormone - HGH Jul 25, 2000 Recently on a trip to Mexico I purchased Somatrope(Human Growth Hormone). I took it once before and it really helped me gain lean mass with little side effects. I want to be sure I am administering the proper dosage. What would it be. I think I was using .3IU 2x a day. |

Response from Dr. Hellerstein
I don't mean to lecture, but it is not the best idea to take growth hormone without medical supervision. You can have side-effects, like diabetes, worsening of blood lipids, carpal tunnel syndrome, head-aches, etc. It may also lead to loss of fat in some areas of the body, which could look like "lipodystrophy" and lead to an incorrect diagnosis of a complication of antiretroviral medications (if you take these) by your doctor. At least let your health care provider know that you are on it. If you are going to use it,the usual dose is more like 6 IU (o.1 U/kg weight) per day. A dose less than about 1.5 IU/day seems not to be effective (according to one study) at increasing muscle mass.
