| treatment for testicular atrophy Nov 20, 2000 Dear Dr. Dieterich, You mention that most of your patients who have tried HCG did not have any benefit. What was the dose of HCG they tried? Did they take Arimidex (anastrozole) or other estrogen blockers in combination with the HCG? Page 76 of _Built To Survive_ suggests 5000 IU per week HCG with 1mg Arimidex qd for four weeks followed by 100mg Clomid qd with 1mg Arimidex qd for four weeks. Is that a lot by your standards? Thanks |

Response from Dr. Dieterich
Actually most of them used 10,000 units weekly. What I said was that the HIV patients did not seem to benefit from it. There may be a reason for that and that is that HIV may be protected from drugs in the testes and continue to damage them even when undetectable in the blood. In patients without HIV, just plain Clomid has been enough to restore testicular function and HCG works just fine. DTD |
