| Facts: Food prepared by HIV + persons Dec 24, 1996 My job intails working with the inmate population, I am constantly asked "Can we get HIV from the Food Service workers that prepare our food that are HIV +?" The inmate population is worried about HIV + people bleeding into their food, etc. I reassure them, however they want facts and medical articles to back this up. I am unable to locate any articles that clearly states the facts. This is a matter of great concern, that if put to rest would help tremendously. |

Response from Dr. Cohen
You cannot become infected from eating food prepared by an HIV-infected person. Typhoid, hepatitis A, shigellosis, definitely. But not HIV. I don't have any references for you. I can only tell you that blood-borne diseases are not transmitted through food. We're 15 years into the epidemic now, and we know how it's transmitted and how it isn't. | |||||||||
