PCP & MAC & Low white blood count
Oct 14, 1997

Our son just got out of the hospital last week, He is in pretty bad shape, His T-cells are 12 his white blood cells are under 2000 he is on crix-epivir-retrvir, He has K,S through out the inside of his body 8 tumors in his stomach and two in his throat, As parents we want to know if the theropy he is on will do him any good or are they just doing this because theres nothing left to do Thank You ,

Response from Dr. Gallant

I'm sorry to hear about your son. Your question is a hard one to answer. If he has all these problems and a T-cell count of 12 despite having been on combination therapy, that's not good. On the other hand, if he just started the therapy after getting to this point there's a good chance it will help him -- it's always worth trying.

While the combination therapy may help his KS, it's really not enough. Some of the newer drugs we now use for the chemotherapy of KS are quite a bit simpler and easier to take than the older combinations. KS often responds very rapidly to chemotherapy. Normally, that would be used in combination with antiretrovirals in someone like your son.

Let me know how he does.
