CURED???
Mar 8, 2001

HI, HAVE THERE BEEN ANY CASES WHERE THE HIV VIRUS OR AIDS WAS CURED OR JUST LIKE VANISHED?

Response from Dr. Cohen

Well, Like, Nope. Not yet, anyway.

There are rare cases where there can be HIV exposure without infection - we know that some have been exposed, and they have some ability to resist becoming infected in the first place. So, in that case, HIV might be in the body, but then, it can't get in the cells, and then dies away in a few days. Some of the people who are this fortunate have a very rare but simple genetic difference on their cells - HIV needs two receptors on our cells to enter - and some people lack one of these two doors. They are otherwise fine, but for some genetic luck, just don't make this other doorway. And therefore HIV cannot attach onto the cells - and if it can't get in, it just dies away pretty quickly. So, you might say that for these, HIV just like vanished.

But if HIV can get in to our cells - it becomes a part of the genetic structure - where it appears to be able to live forever. Which is why cure seems unlikely - some of the cells where HIV hides live as long as we do.

So - we look for ways to get rid of those cells, or keep HIV from doing damage if it is there. And that is what this treatment forum is about.

So, like, does that help? CC
