re: CD4 plummets/Dr Young
Oct 31, 2001
Dr. Young,
You answered a question for me last week regarding a plummeting CD4 count (Went from 618 to 414 in less than 2 months)
I just received the VL result. It has increased from 9,100 (Aug 31,2001) to 112,000 (Oct 20,2001) THIS IS AN ELEVEN-FOLD increase!!! Doc said no meds, test again in 30 days.
4 days after the test was taken I came down with one hell of a sinus infection. Any possibility that had an effect on my counts?
I'm chewing my nails off here...feel like I should be on meds but doc keeps saying no.
What do you think?

Response from Dr. Young

It certainly is possible that your sinus infection had the effect of raising your viral load and CD4 count.
Remember that HIV is a long-term disease. The decision to start or not-start antiretroviral therapy should be made on the basis of confirmed laboratory testing (in this case, confirmation of change in viral load or CD4 count). Hence, repeating the tests after your sinus infection resolves makes alot of sense.
Hope this is helpful. BY
