How is this posible?
Oct 24, 2001

Hello!

Perhaps this is not the right forum but here it goes.

On Jul 12 my Cd4 was 176/8.7 on Sep 17 my Cd4 was 134/10

Isn't it supposed to be a higher Cd4 count in my last lab results?

Thank You!

Response from Dr. Young

Thanks for your question.

Your tests point out the fact that there is tremendous day-to-day variation in CD4 absolute (or total) counts. CD4 percentages have less variation, though are less commonly used in the discussion of HIV disease monitoring.

For simplicity's sake, I think of the average CD4 total count of 200 equivalent to about 15 percent. For each increase (or decrease) of 100 cells, one could expect about 7% change. It is also important to recognize that there can be 2 or 3% point changes from day to day.

Hope this is helpful. BY
