Cd4
Oct 23, 2001
Dear Doc,
Is there any way you can guess some ones cd4 by lympocyte count and WBC, by your experience on seeing many patients? Some one with WBC 8 and lymphocyte count 35?

Response from Dr. Young

There are some ways to make a rough calculation of the maximum expected CD4 cell count based on the total WBC count and the lymphocyte percentage.
In this case, since 35% of the total WBC count is lymphocytes, the total number of lymphocytes is 35% of 8000 cells, or 2800. If one assumes that the typical CD4 percentage does not exceed 50% of the total lymphocyte count, then the maximum CD4 cell count in this example would be 0.50 x 2800 or 1400.
These are only crude estimates, but are of some use in places where it is difficult to accurately determine the CD4 cell number.
Hope that you find this helpful. BY
