Antibiotics: can they affect test result?
Jul 22, 1998
Dear Doctor,
I recently had a possible exposure to HIV. I know that most people will convert by three months. I plan on getting tested then (and hopefully breathe a sigh of relief).
While reading through previous questions, I noticed that chemotherapy and other factors could affect the body's ability to produce antibodies (hence an exception to the window period). I have been taking minocycline for acne for about a year now (and tetracycline for 3 months before that). While those antibiotics have done wonders, I am now concerned that they could posssibly inhibit the production of HIV antibodies. After all, by the original definition of the word, chemotherapy meant the use of chemicals (which mincycline is) to treat illness. Can my medication inhibit such antibody production? I am also taking Serzone for major depression. Could this have a similar effect?
Thank you very much, and please answer!

Response from Dr. Murphy

Dear Antibiotic Questioner,
Antibiotics do not have an effect on the currently used AIDS tests, so don't worry and test away as scheduled.
Good luck.
