Recently Seroconverted, CD4 1065 VL undetectable at 50 copies. The dosctor said to come back in six months for follow-up. What do you think??

Response from Dr. Cohen

I think you might get another viral load sooner than six months - and perhaps get one done by branched DNA technology since it can measure some 'strains' of HIV that the PCR might miss. The reason is that a viral load below 50 copies is a very rare event in someone who recently seroconverted - not impossible, but just unlikely. And treatment soon after infection - like in the first six months - is one of the more exciting developments in maintaining the immune system. So waiting six more months - if this first test was incorrect - is potentially a lost opportunity.

But if another viral load is done and it too is below 50 copies - then getting them done every six months is absolutely reasonable. Since with such a low level - we would not expect to see much go wrong for months and months...

good luck. CC
