Dear Doctor Aberg: I would like to ask you a question, I am a women who had unprotected vaginal sex with ejaculation. I took a base line test on March 19 day after exposure and was negative on Elisa. Sixty Eight days later I went to a clinic trial unit and was given blood, urine test, Elisa and PCR (DNA) test which all were negative. I went to my family doctor and he said the experience was over and I needed no more testing. Do you agree on this. I need some expert advice. Thank you in advance for your help.

Response from Dr. Aberg

The actual recommendations by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) in the US is that you should get tested at 6 weeks, 12 weeks and at six months. Seroconversion (becoming HIV positive by antibody test) usually occcurs within 6-12 weeks with the median time to the test becoming positive at 63 days. This was based on some data using an older version of the lab test we use today. Nevertheless, I do not know what assay your doctor is using.
Given that your viral load (PCR) is negative 68 days after exposure, I agree that it is unlikely that you acquired HIV. I personally would still recommend that you have a repeat HIV test at 12 weeks and as per CDC recommendations, a repeat at six months.
I am glad you have followed up to get your results. This gives your doctor an opportunity to discuss your results and ways to prevent HIV.
