oral sex
Feb 13, 2001
My 10 year old daughter was made to perform oral sex on 2 teen foster boys well for 2 months she had many sores in her mouth and a rash on her face from the irritation of performing the act The hospital did not check her sores in mouth and did not take a blood test , what kind of tests should they have done to be sure she did not contract any thing and if anything what should we look for in the future. The one boy was known to have sex with other boys previously .

Response from Dr. Pavia

The usual set of tests that are done for sexual abuse, sexual assaults or worry over sexually transmitted diseases varies, but most people prefer to do a full panel.
Blood tests are usually done for HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C and syphilis. These usually are repeated at 3 months and/or six months after the exposure, since the tests may not turn positive for a few weeks. A test for gonorrhea and chlamydia is performed on swabs from every area that was exposed, be it throat, rectum or vagina. If sores are present, a test for herpes is usually done on a swab from the sore.
Compared to vaginal or rectal intercourse, the risk of contracting HIV from oral sex is lower. However, it is definitely possible to get HIV, or for that matter, syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia or hepatitis.
If your daughter was evaluated by a child abuse team or by an emergency room with experience in sexual assault cases and in collecting evidence for the police, these tests were probably done correctly. If not, you may want to have her seen by a child abuse team at your local children's hospital. They can also offer support and make sure there is information collected for legal purposes. Take care
