Response from Dr. Cohen

I cannot be sure if you have HIV and are worried about these lymph nodes, or worried if these lymph nodes mean you have as yet unproven HIV. I think however it is the second choice.
If so - please - for you and the MANY others who send your question to this forum - PLEASE! send your question instead to our forum that addresses this all the time - as there are many questions and answers about initial symptoms such as enlarged lymph nodes and whether this means HIV is present. This forum is reserved for TREATMENT questions for those who are positive - But the short answer is that a swollen painful lymph node can be from many things - and HIV is just one of the many things that can lead to this. But there are many many others... so it is far from clear if HIV should be even on the list without more info.
If however you are positive and worried about nodes - in general they are common and not a worry... but there are reasons we would investigate further. Seeing an MD for persistently large nodes is important in case this added testing is needed.
Hope that clarifies.
