Nucliec acid testing
Jul 23, 2001
Dr. Pavia,
I wrote to you before about the p24 + with indeterminate confirm test(test-test- stressed). The test that the red cross does NAT nucliec acid testing is called genoprobe testing, my understanding is they screen for the DNA and RNA of the virus and if it is + then they run the PCR tests.Mine was(-). With this info is a negative antibody 1&2 at 21 weeks enough? Follow up home access at 23 weeks (-) too. Or would taking a PCR DNA finally put this to rest? Please answer. Thanks.

Response from Dr. Pavia

If I read your information correctly, you have had at least two negative antibody tests and a negative screen for the viral DNA and RNA (although I am not familiar with the test you mention). That should be enough to clearly prove you are negative. I don't think additional testing is indicated.
Many people writing to these forums are unable to put their minds to rest after tests that clearly indicate they are not infected. The answer to this is usually counseling and dealing with issues such as guilt and fear, not more testing. I don't know you well enough to suggest that that is the case for you, but you should know that it is a common experience after an episode of unprotected sex.
Good luck
