Dr Young: What's your opininon
Mar 4, 2002

A very heartiest thanks to you for considering my question. I'm 25 years old guy form Asia who travell a lot especially around Europe. At the same time I'm sexually active in male-male sexual intercourse and I'm always 100 top and insertive partner in either anal or oral intercourse. For anal sex I'm always use condom properly and proper lubricates . I would say I'm always change my sexual partner when I travell to different parts of the world but I'm always practise safe sex ( anal sex with condom ). After a while, when I look back of my past experience I become very afraid and worried especially now as there is so many cases of hiv infection reported in Europe. Dr young, I do understand that my question isn't go right to your forum but I need someone has wide experience like you to advise me on this as I 've asked the same question in safe sex forum but never got replied. What is my chance of infection so far and should I go for an antibody test after 1 month? You help is very much appreciated. Thank you.

Response from Dr. Young

Thanks for your question and comments. Yes, we don't typically answer questions about HIV testing and risk of exposure on this forum, but given the sincerity and concern, here goes.

In general terms, the risk of infection to the insertive partner is much lower than for the receptive partner. I would assume that this has to do with the amount of virus that one is exposed to and for how long the exposure was. It is also probably true that the risk for anal penetration is greater than for oral or vaginal intercourse.

Risk of infection relates a lot to the number of partners and degree of protection used. In this regard, I am concerned about your multiple partners, though the use of condoms and the fact that you are the insertive partner is in your favor. Putting a number on the risk is very difficult to do.

If in doubt, I'd always advise getting tested; mostly too remind yourself of the angst that you are not experiencing before your next potentially risky exposure-- it might alter your sexual choices.

Hope this is helpful, BY
