PEP treatment prescribed...enuff?
Jan 13, 2002

Due to condom slippage I may have infected my NEG lover. My VL usually is 22,000-44,000 and CD4 remains 600-800. within 36 hours of the 3 second incident (where there was no ejaculation-perhaps minimal precum) we were at Cedars ER room. He received a 14 day scrip for Trizivir. should this be enuff to cancel any potential virus transmission.

Response from Dr. Cohen

Yes it should in general be enough. There are a few uncertainties in treatment after potential exposure. First - we don't know how long (how many days) to treat after a potential exposure. But 14 days of a triple combo, such as azt, 3tc, and abacavir - the components of the combo tablet Trizivir - is likely to be adequate. There are some who would treat longer - but this is not based on too much info - and may be more important for higher risk exposures. From what you describe the exposure is of low risk to begin with - since the risk of exposure to infectious virus is pretty low. As in very low. But not zero - so thus the prescription.

But treating as you did does lead to hopefully a chance to get a negative test and focus on the issues involved that may further reduce such worries in the future...
