Blood Testing
Jan 31, 2009

Hope you can help me. I am to have blood work done for Helper T-Lymph, RNA, Comp Metabolic Panel and CBC w Diff W Pit. I am just getting over a cold will this effective my results and should I be fasting for these test? Thank you for all you do.

Response from Dr. McGowan

Illnesses other than HIV can affect the HIV viral load. So, your doctor may recommend waiting a few weeks before checking your HIV viral load. CD4 counts can also fluctuate unrelated to HIV infection. There is reason to fast for a HIV viral load or CD4 count or Complete Blood Count. However, if your provider is interested in checking your lipids or screening for diabetes then it is best to have the blood drawn after an overnight fast.
