 The PCR test can become positive within 2-4 weeks from exposure to HIv when the levels in the plasma (liquid part of the blood) reach detectable levels. The test is positive before the Elisa test, which measures antibodies generated by the body in response to the virus. THe PCR will remain positive unless the virus is suppressed by antiretroviral therapy. You can have a "false postive" test in the low levels, therefore this test is not recommneded for screening people for HIV infection...the Elisa should be used. Joe |
