T-Cell Help!
Oct 31, 2008

I have been on meds for about 8 months and my doctor told me that my CD4 count was 185. How do I get it higher and/or what's the highest it could possibly go?

Response from Dr. McGowan

Dear Help!

You do not say what your CD4 count started at. If you started below 50 then a count of 185 at 8 months is great. As long as your viral load is undetectable as it should be by now, you should give it some time. Counts can take several years to increase to normal levels when meds are started with low CD4. Many factors affect how fast the CD4 count will recover such as: age, lowest CD4 level, presence of an opportunistic infection, type of antiretroviral used, and prescence of other chronic illness.

Good luck, Joe
