| Combivir & Sustiva Oct 31, 2008 Is there any plans to introduce this regime into a '1 pill a day' med? Since starting this regime 3 years ago I have suffered stomach problems, feeling sick every morning, which is getting me down = my docs reckon its not my meds and just 'IBS' symptoms yet they only started when I started meds - i have had all tests from blood works to endoscopy and gastroscopy and they have found nothing that can cause this... ... What on earth could i possibly try that will resolve these symptoms? I dont want to change if I can help it, but cant live each day feeling like crap and having gut problems all the time as it is effecting my quality of life - but the mad thing is they are working and the virus is undetectable and my CD4 count 550+ |

Response from Dr. McGowan
You are facing a common problem. There is a difference between the main effects of a drug (in this case suppressing HIV) and the side effects of drugs. It is possible for combivir or any of our antiretroviral drugs to cause Gastro-intestinal upset. Since your symptoms started with the meds and have persisted despite a good CD4 increase it may caused by the meds. Have you tried symptomatic treatmnts such as Calcium supplements and anti-nasea and gas pills as needed? If the problem is sporadic that may help, but if it is all the time it is reasonable to discuss other options with your doctors. There are many options for you since you are on your first treatment. Joe PS. There are no plans for a combination tablet of combivir and Sustiva. The zidovudine part of the combivir cannot be dosed once a day. |
