cd4 count
Oct 31, 2008

What is considered the normal required cd4 count?

Response from Dr. McGowan

That is a very interesting question. The answer isn't fully known. Most opportunistic infections occur with CD4 counts below 200, but recent data indicate that excess risk of HIV and non-HIV related diseases can occur with CD4 counts up to 350 or higher. One study from the United Kingdom implied that a count of 650 was needed. One thing to be aware of is that studies report on the averages across many poeple. Some people will do fine with a CD4 count in the 300s and others will not. The ratio of the CD4 count to the CD8 count can give you a sense of how close to "normal" any individual is. When that ratio is 1.0 or better than you have reached a normal balance for you.

Joe
