Response from Dr. Daar
It is certainly possible to acquire a drug resistant virus from a person who has been on therapy. However, there are no absolutes. The good news is that it is now the standard of care to do drug resistance testing on newly diagnosed patients. The results of this test should tell you what you need to know regarding furture treatment options. Furthermore, with the number of currently available agents you should have no problem being treated in the future, even if you were unlucky enough to acquire a resistant virus. Best, Eric |
