| Fasting and HIV Aug 7, 2007 I want to go on a 7 day fast. I have HIV and have been positive for only about 2 months. My BMI is about 22%. I have been on fasts before, just not with HIV and don't know what the impact will be on my immune system. |

Response from Dr. Daar
I regret that I can not tell you precisely what the risks may be. Certainly there are some medications that are best absorbed or tolerated with food. You would need to discuss this with your provider. I generally encourage all of my patients to eat right since good nutrition clearly does influence overall well-being and immune status. What effect a week fast might have on your immune system is not known. Consequently, I would encourage you to discuss this with your provider. Only then can you explain what you hope to gain from the fast and this can be balanced against the potential risks. Best, Eric |
