Is this a good combo to treat hiv?
May 14, 2007

Hi; I developed pcp in 2003 , today my virus in below 0 and the t cells 430. My doctor treats me by using only truvada and viracept. Do you think this treatment is enough ? or is it lacking some type of medication? thanks in advance.

Response from Dr. Daar

Thank you for your post.

From my perspective the best regimen is one that gets your viral load to undetectable, is easy for you to take and well tolerated. When using a protease inhibitor most providers and guidelines favor using protease inhibitors that are boosted by ritonavir with less use of those that are not, such as viracept. The main reason for this is in some cases convenience, better virologic response and if viral rebound occurs it is less likely to do so with protease resistant mutations. That said, many of us still have patients taking viracept. Typically they are people like you that have done very well on the drug with good viral suppression and tolerance.

At this point you would recommend that you discuss this with your expert provider so that you can fully appreciate the advantages and disadvantages of continuing or changing your current regimen. Either way, you should do very well.

Best, Eric
